Wheelchair 20 Inch Seat Rental in Kansas City

A 20-inch-seat manual wheelchair fits riders who need more width than the 18-inch standard comfortably accommodates but don't require bariatric reinforcement. It's our 'wide-standard' — same frame family as the 18-inch with a couple of extra inches of seat space for larger-frame adults, broader shoulders, or longer-duration use where a snug fit becomes uncomfortable over time.

Best For

  • Larger-frame adults who find the 18-inch standard snug
  • Extended-duration rentals where seat comfort matters over hours
  • Post-surgical recovery for riders whose body frame is above average
  • Bariatric-adjacent: riders who need extra width but are under the 300 lb capacity of standard manual wheelchairs
  • Convention and multi-venue visits where comfort over long days wins out

The 20-inch-seat manual wheelchair is our “wide-standard” — same frame and folding mechanism as the 18-inch but with two extra inches of seat width. It fills the gap between “ordinary standard adult” (18-inch) and “bariatric” (24-inch reinforced). Many larger-frame adults find the 18-inch noticeably snug over an 8-hour day; the 20-inch addresses exactly that.

Is This the Right Size For You?

Quick rule of thumb: measure hip-to-hip seat width at the widest point. Add an inch of margin for comfortable sitting. If the result is 19-20 inches, this chair is right. If it’s 18 or under, the 18-inch standard is the better fit. If it’s 22+, the 24-inch bariatric is probably the right call, especially if rider weight is above 300 lbs.

How the Rental Works

Same flow as all our wheelchair rentals: hotel or residence delivery, bell-stand hand-off or coordinated window, folded for trunk transport at the end. See the wheelchair overview page for the full cross-size comparison and pricing on the main site.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose 20 inch over 18 inch?
If the rider's hip-to-hip seat width is 18-19 inches, the 20-inch gives roughly an inch of comfort margin on each side — meaningful over multi-hour use. If the rider is within the standard frame and weight range but prefers more seat room, 20-inch is the call.
When should I choose 20 inch over 24 inch bariatric?
Under 300 lbs rider weight: 20-inch. Above 300 lbs or needing reinforced frame construction: 24-inch bariatric. The bariatric is purpose-built for higher weight and capacity, not just width.
Is this noticeably larger to maneuver than the 18-inch?
Slightly. The chair's overall footprint is a couple of inches wider, which mostly shows up in narrow doorways and tight turns. For ordinary hotel rooms, accessible restrooms, and standard indoor environments, the difference is imperceptible.
Can this wheelchair be self-propelled?
Yes. Same self-propulsion mechanism as the 18-inch standard — large push-rings on the rear wheels, operable by riders with sufficient upper-body strength.
Does it fit in a sedan trunk for family-vehicle transport?
Yes. The 20-inch width folds to the same trunk-friendly footprint as the 18-inch. Any standard sedan trunk accommodates it.
