The Plaza Art Fair is one of the top juried art festivals in the Midwest — a three-day September weekend when Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza transforms into an open-air gallery of more than 240 artists from across the country, paired with multiple music stages, food vendors, and Plaza-wide festival programming. More than 200,000 visitors attend across the three days, making it one of the largest annual events the Plaza hosts. For visitors with mobility needs, Art Fair weekend is both a tremendous opportunity (the art itself, the music, the atmosphere) and a logistical challenge (density, distance, three full days of outdoor walking) that a rental scooter completely resolves.
This guide covers Art Fair weekend specifically. For year-round Plaza accessibility, see our Country Club Plaza Accessibility Guide. For the venue-level Plaza page, see the Plaza scooter rental venue page.
About the Plaza Art Fair
The Art Fair has run on the Plaza for decades and is a juried show — meaning artists apply and are selected rather than simply renting a booth. The festival’s anchors:
- 240+ juried artists across painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry, fiber arts, glass, mixed media, woodwork, and more. Most artists are available at their booths to discuss their work and sell directly.
- Music stages with continuous programming across the weekend — jazz, folk, indie, and regional acts on multiple Plaza stages.
- Food vendors and food trucks adding to the Plaza’s normal dining options.
- Children’s Art Fair — a dedicated area with hands-on activities for younger visitors.
- Cultural programming including artist demonstrations, live art creation, and special events.
The festival’s atmosphere is distinctly Plaza — architecturally stunning, family-friendly during the day, and livelier as evening arrives.
How We Serve Art Fair Attendees
We deliver mobility scooters to your Plaza-area hotel (or any other Kansas City hotel) before your check-in. The scooter is staged at the bell stand or front desk when you arrive. For Plaza hotel guests, roll directly from the hotel onto the Plaza and into the festival. For visitors staying elsewhere in KC, rideshare to a Plaza drop-off point and enter the festival on the scooter.
The scooter stays with you for the full weekend — festival days plus any tourism, dining, or other KC plans. After each day, it returns to your hotel for overnight charging.
Hotel Base Options
Plaza hotels. Marriott Country Club Plaza, Embassy Suites Plaza, Sheraton Suites Plaza. The most convenient base. Short roll from hotel to festival. Our most-recommended option for Art Fair specifically.
Crown Center hotels. Westin, Sheraton. Rideshare or a longer streetcar-plus-roll combination. Works well if pairing Art Fair with Crown Center / Union Station visits.
Downtown convention hotels. Longer rideshare to the Plaza. Best if Art Fair is part of a broader multi-district weekend.
Art Fair Navigation on a Scooter
A few tips specific to this festival:
Map the district in advance. The Plaza Art Fair spreads across the full Plaza district, with artist booths organized on closed-to-vehicles streets. Plan a route that covers the blocks you want to prioritize.
Pace yourself across the three days. Most visitors spend more than one day. A Friday afternoon for a lighter-crowd preview, Saturday for the full experience, and Sunday morning to revisit favorites is a common pattern.
Plan meal breaks proactively. Plaza restaurants fill during Art Fair weekend. Reservations or early/late meal timing helps. Food trucks and festival vendors handle quick meals without reservations.
Use the fountains and plazas for rest breaks. The Plaza’s open spaces and fountain areas provide seating for rest; interior retail spaces offer climate control if it’s hot.
Art Fair + Nelson-Atkins pairing. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a short distance east of the Plaza. Many Art Fair visitors combine the festival with a museum visit, often on Friday (before Art Fair peak hours) or Sunday morning.
Buying Art on a Scooter
A practical note: if you’re buying art, most artists can package and ship your purchases directly, which matters if you’re flying in or if your purchase is fragile or oversized. For smaller purchases, a scooter’s storage basket or under-seat compartment can handle a few items. For larger pieces, coordinate shipping at the artist’s booth.
Weather Planning
Late-September Kansas City weather tends toward pleasant days (70-80°F) with cooler evenings (50s-60s). Plan for:
- Daytime. Layers that adjust as the day warms up. Sun protection.
- Evening. A light jacket for after sunset.
- Rain contingency. Fall KC weather includes occasional rain systems. Festival typically proceeds in light rain. Poncho in the day bag.
The scooter handles all of this without issue.
Equipment Recommendations
For Art Fair weekend, we recommend a four-wheel travel scooter with:
- Good maneuverability for the crowded festival environment.
- Comfortable seat for the long days.
- Reliable battery range across three festival days with overnight hotel charging.
- Storage basket for water, sunscreen, festival programs, and any small art purchases.
- Stable handling for paved streets with occasional decorative paver sections.
Booking and Hospitality Framing
KC Mobility Scooter Rentals is a hospitality rental service. We are not a medical provider, we do not bill insurance, and we do not require documentation of need. Plaza Art Fair rentals are direct-pay and treated like any other piece of trip logistics. If you have specific health questions about whether mobility equipment is appropriate for you, please consult your physician. For the festival itself, we’re the people to call.
Book online at kcmobilityscooterrentals.com/reserve or call to reserve. Four weeks of lead time is recommended for Art Fair weekend; Plaza hotels and rental inventory both fill quickly.
